A trip to the Sundarbans from Kolkata is a fantastic 2-night, 3-day journey that transitions from the bustling city to the world's largest mangrove forest. Most tours follow a standard route starting with a road trip to the "Gateway of the Sundarbans" followed by river cruises to explore the wildlife.

Day 1: Journey to the Mangroves

The adventure typically begins early in the morning with a pickup from central locations like the Indian Museum Click to open side panel for more information  or Science City Click to open side panel for more information  in Kolkata. You will drive for about 3 to 4 hours to reach the Godkhali Ferry Ghat Click to open side panel for more information , where your boat safari officially starts.

  • Activities: After boarding your motorboat, you'll cruise toward your resort (often in Pakhiralay or Dayapur). En route, you can visit the historic Sir Daniel Hamilton's Bungalow Click to open side panel for more information , who founded the cooperative movement in the area.
  • Evening: Enjoy a sunset cruise or a local cultural program featuring traditional "Baul" songs or tribal "Jhumur" dances organized at the resorts.

Day 2: Deep Jungle Safari

This is the highlight of the trip, dedicated to exploring the core area of the Sundarban Tiger Reserve. You'll spend the entire day on a boat, navigating through narrow creeks and wide rivers.

Sajnekhali Wildlife Sanctuary Click to open side panel for more information : Often the first stop, this sanctuary houses a Mangrove Interpretation Centre, a museum, and a watchtower for birding.

Sudhanyakhali Watch Tower Click to open side panel for more information : Known as one of the best spots to catch a glimpse of the Royal Bengal Tiger, as animals frequently visit the nearby freshwater pond.

  • Dobanki Watch Tower Click to open side panel for more information : Famous for its 896-meter long "Canopy Walk," allowing you to walk above the ground within a secured, netted enclosure to view wildlife safely.

Day 3: Local Life and Return

On your final day, the focus shifts to the human element of the Sundarbans and the return journey.

  • Activities: Start with a guided village walk to interact with the local community, learn about honey collection, and see how villagers live in harmony with the forest. You might also visit the Beacon Bungalow Click to open side panel for more information , where Rabindranath Tagore once stayed.
  • Return: After an early lunch, you'll head back to Godkhali Ferry Ghat Click to open side panel for more information  by boat and then drive back to Kolkata, usually arriving by evening.

Planning Tip: The best time to visit is from November to February when the weather is cool and pleasant for boat safaris. Remember to carry a valid ID proof, as it is mandatory for forest permits.
