A trip from Kolkata to Varanasi (Benaras) offers a profound journey into the spiritual heart of India.

This 4-night, 5-day itinerary focuses on the ancient rituals, historical depth, and vibrant culture of the region.

Day 1: Arrival and The Evening Aarti

After traveling from Kolkata (via a morning flight or overnight train like the Himgiri Express), settle into your accommodation near the ghats to soak in the atmosphere.

Dashashwamedh Ghat Click to open side panel for more information  is the most vibrant and

famous riverfront in Varanasi, serving as the primary hub for religious activity.

  • The evening Ganga Aarti here is a synchronized ritual of fire and chants that shouldn't be missed.
  • Watching the ceremony from a boat on the river provides the best vantage point for photography and a more peaceful experience.

Day 2: Spiritual Heart of Kashi

Begin your day early to witness the city waking up at the river’s edge before heading into the narrow, winding alleys of the old city.

Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple Click to open side panel for more information  is one of the

holiest Shiva temples in the world, featuring a magnificent gold-plated spire.

  • Early morning visits are recommended to avoid long queues for "Darshan."
  • The temple is now part of a large corridor connecting it directly to the Ganges, making access much easier for visitors.

Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple Click to open side panel for more information

is a significant religious site founded by the poet-saint Tulsidas.

  • Known for its peaceful courtyard and frequent "Bhajan" (devotional song) performances.
  • Visitors should be mindful of the resident monkeys, which are a characteristic part of the temple experience.

Day 3: Sarnath and The University Campus

Dedicate this day to exploring the outskirts of the main city, focusing on Buddhist history and modern education.

Sarnath Click to open side panel for more information  is where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma after attaining enlightenment.

  • Features the towering Dhamek Stupa and ruins of ancient monasteries.
  • The Sarnath Museum nearby houses the famous Ashoka Lion Capital, the national emblem of India.

  • Visit the New Vishwanath Temple (VT) located within the campus, which is famous for its marble architecture.
  • The campus museum, Bharat Kala Bhavan, has an impressive collection of miniature paintings and sculptures.

Day 4: Morning Boat Ride and Ramnagar

Experience the "Subah-e-Banaras" (the morning of Benaras) before crossing the river to explore the regal side of the city.

Assi Ghat Click to open side panel for more information  is famous for its early morning

yoga sessions and the soulful morning Aarti.

  • It marks the confluence of the Ganga and Assi rivers and is a favorite spot for long-term travelers.
  • Many popular cafes and bookstores are located in the streets leading up to this ghat.

Ramnagar Fort Click to open side panel for more information  is a massive 18th-century sandstone structure located on the eastern bank of the Ganges.

  • Contains a museum with an eclectic collection of vintage cars, royal palanquins, and ancient weaponry.
  • The fort is the residence of the current Maharaja of Varanasi and is particularly vibrant during the Ramlila festival.

Day 5: Local Shopping and Departure

Before heading back to Kolkata, spend your morning exploring the local markets.

  • Shopping: Varanasi is world-renowned for its Banarasi Silk Sarees. Visit the markets in Godowlia or Chowk for authentic textiles.
  • Food: Don't leave without trying local delicacies like Kachori Sabzi for breakfast or the famous Banarasi Paan.

Gold embers dance where the sacred Ganga flows, As temple bells chime while the saffron twilight glows. In every narrow lane, ancient secrets softly tread, Where life and liberation weave a timeless golden thread.
